In partnership with the Morgan Hill Unified School District, AIM provides coaches and extra-curricular math enrichment programs for students enrolled in 4th through 12th grades. This partnership agreement follows:
In the twenty first century we recognize that as part of a global society our students must develop wide ranging problem solving skills, including thinking logically, analyzing a problem by breaking it down and, if necessary, looking for different and creative solutions. We understand that a mathematically literate populace is key to the economic development of our region and nation.
In order to develop numeracy to its full potential it is important to provide students with opportunities to expand and maximize their mathematical potential through a series of initiatives and programs aimed at 4th through 12th grade students. It is critical to identify students who have mathematical aptitude and develop that talent to the highest level, including abstract thinking and creative problem solving
We also understand the importance of creating opportunities for teachers to engage in professional dialogue with research mathematicians in order to enrich classroom instruction. This partnership will include but is not limited to:
-
An after school program at each elementary which focuses on problem solving and mathematical games for students in grades 4 through 6. AIM will provide materials, support and training to parent volunteer coaches at each school, while MHUSD will ensure that adequate space is provided for implementation.
-
Students in 6th grade across the district will also have the opportunity to attend an after school problem solving course at a central location.
-
A before or after school program at each middle school which provides a comprehensive problem solving curriculum for students in grades 7 and 8.
-
MHUSD and AIM will continue to explore the implementation of an elective problem solving course at the middle school level
-
Students in grades 4 through 8 will have opportunities to compete in several national mathematics contests including Math Olympiad, MATHCOUNTS and the American Mathematics Contest (AMC).
-
A chapter of Mu Alpha Theta, a national Math Honors society, will be formed at each comprehensive high school, co-sponsored by AIM and a high school faculty member. Mu Alpha Theta will host activities, such as participation in national high school math competitions, talks by local mathematicians and peer tutoring in math. Additionally, members will have the opportunity to volunteer in sister programs sponsored by AIM at the elementary and junior high school levels, as well as AIM's other community outreach programs.
-
Seek additional resources through grant opportunities.
