As the major component of it's Morgan Hill community outreach, AIM provides coaches and extra-curricular math enrichment programs for students enrolled in 4th through 12th grades: These include:
Mathletics
This program for mathematically talented students enrolled in 4th and 5th grades was introduced in the 2008-2009 school year. Mathletics introduces problem solving to young students, working toward making the complex seem simple and simultaneously making math fun. Mathletics reviews the ten basic problem-solving techniques, tackling both multi-step word problems (similar to those found in the "Creative Problem Solver") and more challenging "out of the box" thinking problems.
Following an entrance exam in the spring, and starting in the fall, approximately sixty students from Morgan Hill's elementary schools are invited to attend 1 hour weekly classes after school at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center's Gavilan College.
The Fall 2011 Mathletics classes are tentatively scheduled to meet weekly on Tuesdays, from 3:30 to 4:30 pm at the Morgan Hill Gavilan Community College. Classes will run October through November (for 8 weeks).
Online registration is now CLOSED for students wishing to take the entrance exam. If you are not able to attend our May 18th tryout 4-5 pm), you may choose one of our alternate dates, May 26th (4-5 pm) or June 9th (4-5 pm). All sessions will be at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center. Participation at one of the three tryout meetings is mandatory. If you are unable to register online, or for additional details about program logistics and student selection, see FAQs or contact Mathletics program coordinator Lori Mains.
MathCounts6
This program for mathematically talented students enrolled in 6th grade is a follow-on to the Mathletics program. The MathCounts6 program uses word problems to develop new skills in the areas of probability, combinatorics, statistics and number theory. Students also continue to focus on logic and problem solving techniques. This increased mathematical breadth and depth provides students with a foundation for the middle school MATHCOUNTS program.
Following an entrance exam in the spring, and starting in the fall, forty students from Morgan Hill's elementary schools are invited to attend 1 hour weekly tutorials after school at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center's Gavilan College. Students subsequently may be invited to compete in the MATHCOUNTS Chapter competition in February. Students participating in the Chapter competition will be provided with additional MATHCOUNTS training sessions in January and February, along with other selected 6th, 7th, and 8th graders.
The Fall 2011 MathCounts6 classes are scheduled to meet weekly on Thursdays, from 4:00 to 5:00 pm at the Morgan Hill Gavilan Community College. Classes will run October through November (for 8 weeks).

Math Olympiad
AIM sponsors participation (by students in 4th-6th grades) in the national Math Olympiad contest. During each of five monthly sessions, students will take a five question, 30 minute, Math Olympiad quiz, with the instructor reviewing the problems and solution during the remaining half hour of class time. Go to www.moems.org for sample quizzes.
There are no entrance requirements for the program; any student in 4th-6th grade who is interested in challenging him/herself is welcome.
The program will meet on the second Wednesday of the month for five months, starting in November. The dates will be as follow: 11/16/11, 12/14/11, 1/11/12, 2/8/12, 3/14/12. Meetings will be 7-8 pm at the Morgan Hill Community & Cultural Center at the corner of Dunne Ave. and Monterey Road, Morgan Hill, in the Madrone Room. There is a $10 registration fee, payable on the first night of class.
Online registration is now AVAILABLE and encouraged. If you are not able to register online, parents may register their student at the first class. Questions may be directed to the program coordinator Lori Mains.
MATHCOUNTS
This is a national middle school competitive math program. Students focus on complex problems, methodologies and challenging the mind. Advanced problem solving techniques are tested at School, Chapter, State, and National competitions.
AIM has provided MATHCOUNTS coaches for Morgan Hill's students enrolled in 7th and 8th grades since 2004. Students participate in an 11 week program starting in late September. In January, a subset of students from each school is selected to train for and participate in the Chapter competition in February. Teams and students excelling at the Chapter competition may advance to the subsequent Northern California State competition. For the past five years, Morgan Hill teams have advanced to the State competition.
MATHCOUNTS classes for Fall 2011 are scheduled for 12 weeks as follow:
Britton Middle School - Tuesday and Thursday mornings at Britton, 8-8:50 am, starting September 20th. See flyer and permission form.
Charter School of Morgan Hill - Wednesdays, 1 1/2 hour classes at CSMH, immediately after school (start time depends on school schdule that week), starting September 14th. See flyer and permission form.
Martin Murphy Middle School - Students are invited to participate in the "Central" program Wednesday evenings at the Morgan Hill Centennial Recreation Center (CRC), starting September 14th. See flyer and permission form.
Central Program - Students attending other public or private schools in Morgan Hill are welcome to participate. Classes are Wednesday evenings (usually 7-8:30 pm; some will be 5:30-7 pm) at the Morgan Hill Centennial Recreation Center (CRC), starting September 14th. See flyer and permission form.
For additional details about program logistics and student selection, see FAQs or contact MATHCOUNTS program coordinator Elizabeth Mandel.
American Mathematics Contest (AMC8, AMC10, AMC12)
As part of the coaching program provided to Middle School students, we provide students with the opportunity to compete in an additional mathematics contest, the AMC8. We also enroll and proctor high school students wishing to take the more challenging AMC10 or AMC12 competitions.
Other Advanced Math Competitions
Students excelling on the AMC10 or AMC12 are invited to participate in the prestigious American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) which in turn may lead to an invitation to participate in the US Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO) or the US Junior Mathematical Olympiad (USAJMO). Another challenging local competition that many of our students have participated in is the Bay Area Mathematical Olympiad (BAMO). We provide additional training for students competing at these higher levels.
Mu Alpha Theta
Our high school program, for students in 9th through 12th grades, is designed around a "club" format (one option of which is the national Mu Alpha Theta National Math Honor Society), allowing students to develop curriculum and explore topics of interest.
Director's Circles
Dr. Brian Conrey, Executive Director of AIM, provides several seminars a year, designed to challenge top Morgan Hill students. Participation is by personal invitation.
