Mathletics
This program for mathematically talented students enrolled in 4th
and 5th grades was introduced in the 2008-2009 school year. Mathletics introduces problem solving to young students, working toward
making the complex seem simple and simultaneously making math fun.
Mathletics reviews the ten basic problem-solving techniques, tackling
both multi-step word problems (similar to those found in the "Creative
Problem Solver") and more challenging "out of the box"
thinking problems.
Following an entrance exam in May, and starting in mid-September, approximately
sixty students from Morgan Hill's elementary schools are invited to
attend 1 hour weekly classes after school at the Morgan Hill Community
and Cultural Center's Gavilan College.
The Fall 2010 Mathletics classes are tentatively scheduled to meet
weekly on Tuesdays, from 3:30 to 4:30 pm at the Morgan Hill Gavilan
Community College. Classes will run for eight weeks, from October
through November.
Tryouts for the Fall 2010 Mathletics class were held in May 2010 and
parents were notified of their child's status in June. The class is
now closed to enrollment. However, if your family had extenuating
circumstances that led you to mss the tryouts, please contact the
Mathletics program coordinator Lori Mains.
For additional details about the program, see FAQs
or contact Mathletics program coordinator Lori
Mains.
MathCounts6
This program for mathematically talented students enrolled in 6th
grade is a follow-on to the Mathletics program. The MathCounts6 program uses word problems to develop new skills in
the areas of probability, combinatorics, statistics and number theory.
Students also continue to focus on logic and problem solving techniques.
This increased mathematical breadth and depth provides students with
a foundation for the middle school MATHCOUNTS program.
Following an entrance exam in May, and starting in mid-September, forty students from Morgan Hill's elementary schools are invited to
attend one hour weekly tutorials after school at the Morgan Hill Community
and Cultural Center's Gavilan College. Students subsequently may be invited to compete in the MATHCOUNTS Chapter competition in February.
Students participating in the Chapter competition will be provided
with additional MATHCOUNTS training sessions in January and February,
along with other selected 6th, 7th, and 8th graders.
The Fall 2010 MathCounts6 classes are tentatively scheduled will meet
weekly on Thursdays, from 3:30 to 4:30 pm at the Morgan Hill Gavilan
Community College. Classes will run for eight weeks, from October
through November. The class is now closed to enrollment. However,
if your family had extenuating circumstances that led you to miss
the tryouts, please contact the MathCounts6 program coordinator Dave Holmstrom.
For additional details about program logistics and student selection,

Holmstrom.
Math Olympiad
AIM sponsors participation (by students in 4th-6th grades) in the national Math Olympiad contest. During each of five monthly
sessions, students will take a five question, 30 minute, Math Olympiad
quiz. The quizzes will be scored and the instructior will review the
problems and solutions in the remaining half hour of class time. Go
to www.moems.org
for sample quizzes.
There are no entrance requirements for the program; any student in
4th-6th grade who is interested in challenging him/herself is welcome.
Sign-ups for this program will be through this website, starting in
October. Check back here for a link to register.
The class schedule will be determined at a later date. Questions may be directed to the program coordinator Lori Mains.
MATHCOUNTS
This is a national middle school competitive math program. Students focus on complex problems, methodologies and challenging the
mind. Advanced problem solving techniques are tested at School, Chapter,
State, and National competitions.
AIM has provided MATHCOUNTS coaches for Morgan Hill's students enrolled
in 7th, and 8th grades since 2004. Students participate in
an 11 week program starting in the fall. In January, a subset of students
from each school is selected to train for and participate in the Chapter
competition in February. Teams and students excelling at the Chapter
competition may advance to the subsequent Northern California State
competition. For the past four years, Morgan Hill teams and individual
students have advanced to the State competition.
TThe Fall 2010 MATHCOUNTS classes will be held at a centralized location
for students from all local schools who are interested in participating.
The tentative schedule follows:
Tuesdays, 4:00-5:30 pm -- beginning-intermediate level.
Thursdays, 7:00-8:30 pm -- intermediate-advanced level
Students are welcome to attend either or both sessions, depending on
their level of experience and/or interest. While an entrance exam
is not required, you may choose to submit an online MATHCOUNTS
Information Request to ensure you receive further information
in September. For additional details about program logistics and student selection,
see FAQs
or contact MATHCOUNTS program coordinator Elizabeth
Mandel.
Mu
Alpha Theta
Our high school program, for students in 9th through 12th grades,
is designed around a "club" format (one option of which
is the national Mu Alpha Theta National Math Honor Society), allowing
students to develop curriculum and explore topics of interest.
Director's Circles
Dr. Brian Conrey, Executive Director of AIM, provides several seminars
a year, designed to challenge top Morgan Hill students. Participation
is by personal invitation.
